What is a Compressed Air Leak Survey?
A compressed air leak survey is a structured walk-through of a compressed air system to locate, record, and quantify air leaks, usually with an ultrasonic leak detector. Each leak is tagged with a location, estimated flow rate, and repair cost. The survey turns scattered leaks into a single total annual loss and a prioritized repair list — the core of practical compressed air leak management for plants and service contractors.
What Should a Compressed Air Leak Report Include?
A useful air leak survey report includes the project and facility details, survey date, operating assumptions (hours, electricity rate, compressor specific power), a leak list with ID, location, flow rate, annual cost and repair status, the total estimated annual loss, remaining open loss, and a prioritized repair list. How Do You Prioritize Compressed Air Leak Repairs?
The simplest transparent rule is payback: compare each leak's repair cost against its annual energy savings. Leaks that pay back within three months are HIGH priority, three to twelve months is MEDIUM, and over twelve months is LOW. Sorting by payback and then by annual savings tells maintenance teams exactly where to start, without needing a complex engineering model.
How Are Compressed Air Leak Costs Estimated?
Each leak's flow rate (in CFM or L/s) is converted into compressor power using the system's specific power (kW per 100 CFM). Multiplying by annual operating hours gives wasted kWh, and multiplying by the electricity rate gives the annual cost loss. Summing all leaks gives the survey total.
